Each Sparrowhawk Leather piece is made to order by skilled Leather Artisan, Fiona Ritchie.

Fiona uses time honoured leathercraft techniques, including hand embossing and hand dyeing, allowing Sparrowhawk customers specify the colour and personalization of their piece.

By carefully selecting the leather to cut from the hide, and hand rubbing their dye colour to enhance its individual grain, Fiona crafts a one-off piece, with a unique finish, that is exclusively theirs.

Fiona's leather knowledge, designs and craftsmanship ensures each customer's Sparrowhawk leather piece is fit for purpose, beautiful and stands the test of time.

It takes knowledge, practiced techniques, and the best materials to achieve true leather craftsmanship. From 2014, when I made my first Pilot Logbook Cover following 3 days private tuition at a working tannery in Sydney, True Leather Craftsmanship has been my gold standard for Sparrowhawk.

Since then, I have made close to 2500 leather pieces from my Hunua Farm workshop. These include wallets, journal covers and documents holders. Each one is custom made, and personalised for its owner. Sparrowhawk Leather’s renowned Pilot Logbook covers are trusted and treasured by hundreds of pilots across NZ and Australia.

Whether commissioned as special gifts, business accessories or for personal use, Sparrowhawk Leather’s bespoke pieces are prized by their owners and recognised for their distinctive quality.

The pandemic had caused us to reflect both on what we buy locally, and on work made with skilled and caring hands. These beautiful wallets are part of that story -- rare and significant gifts for one another within the whānau. I had received a treasured Sparrowhawk wallet from my wife, and in turn have just gifted a wallet to my wife. She's delighted. Our son was gifted a wallet for his 21st birthday, and our daughter gifted one to her partner when he turned 21: "mā te huruhuru te manu ka rere" -- fully fledged, a bird can fly. A wallet gets daily use, and Fiona's skills and care bring a well-crafted, practical, and aesthetic lift to our respective days.

The ladies wallet that was hand made for me was everything that was promised. A superb piece of craftmanship which is hard to find these days. Frequently Asked Questions

Most times of the year, please allow 12 working days for our Leather Artisan, Fiona Ritchie, to make your order, plus Courier Delivery time.

More time may be needed at certain times of the year including Mother’s Day and Christmas when Fiona has a high number of orders to make.
When we receive your order, we will send you an email to confirm our making time. You will be able to cancel your order at that time, should our making time be unworkable for you. If we do not hear from you within 12 hours, we will consider you have agreed to our making time, and will accept your payment and Fiona will start making your order.

If you need your order earlier for a special occasion, Fiona may be able to make in 3 working days. This will involve her working longer hours, so a $25 premium will apply. Remember, there will still be Courier Delivery time.
If you want to gift your piece earlier than Fiona is able to make it; we can prepare a personalised Gift Card with your message and details of the piece you have ordered, plus expected delivery date.
If you would like the person to be able to specify their own leather colours & personalisation details, you may choose to purchase a Gift Certificate for the product you have chosen.

Fiona has recommended colour combinations that she knows work well with this design and inner colour. The inner colours can not be changed, and stitching looks best on the inside when it matches the inner colour.
If you would like another hand dyed outer colour, please Contact Fiona. If you wish to see a WIP photo, please be aware it will take us time to photograph and send, and our workflow will be interrupted waiting for your approval. An additional admin fee of $15 will apply.

The letters are 6mm high each, More than 4 letters can look too large on the wallet.

We have two standard fonts for you to choose from. We will confirm your preference when we email to confirm details of your order.

Please type your initials format (with or without dots) how you would like them. Generally, ladies like initials with no dots. When we email to confirm our making time and the details of your order, we will confirm your preference regarding dots with initials.

Lower case letters are not available in the alphabet embossing set.

Our 100% full grain calf leather inners are made by some New Zealand leather manufacturers living in Australia. They make premium quality inners used by some of the best leather artisan in the world, particularly the Sheridan style leather carvers in the US. They buy the leather in bulk and then use a “knife” (a bit like a cookie cutter) on a clicking press machine to cut out the numerous pieces, which are assembled with stiffening and other materials, and sewn on a leather sewing machine. These knives cost around $100 each, and 6 or more may be required for one “inner”. In this way, their designs are predetermined and can not be changed with a minimum quantity being produced. Using these quality inners allows Sparrowhawk to make 100% leather wallets that are cost effective for our customers.

Your Sparrowhawk Leather piece will match the photograph and descriptions on our website, except for the natural variations found in leather, through hand dyeing, and any customisation that you have requested. i.e. colour. It will give you a reasonable amount of service given reasonable use and leather care.

If there is a problem with your Sparrowhawk Leather piece, please contact us. If your piece has been used in a reasonable fashion for its function, and you have taken care of the leather in line with our Care Instruction, in most circumstances we will repair your piece free of charge.
